"Uday brings out the madness in me" Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra talks about her fantabulous experiHow did the movie happen?
Ans: - That's a really interesting question! I think Uday and Jugal met me at some point and gave me the script to read. But I think it took about 4 months to happen, because I usually take a little time to know whether it is something I need to do or not for sure. The one thing I knew about PI was that it was just magic as a script. I started reading it thinking I might fall asleep because I was shooting for Kaminey at that time, but when I started reading, I just could not put it down, and I was reading it till about 4am! That's when I knew there was something about it. And I was finally on! It's actually that simple!

Did Jugal read the script to you? If yes, how did he read it?
Ans: - Jugal's known for his animation movies. I did not know that. I think the most animated thing that he actually does is saying "acha". And Jugal wasn't the one who narrated the film to me, it was Uday. And it was probably best, since he had written the film. During the narration Jugal was sitting right there. I thought, "This Director doesn't talk at all. How is he going to ever tell me what to do?!" But once I got to know him, it went way beyond just "acha".

Would you like to share the story with us?
Ans: - The story is about this guy called Abhay Sharma, and starts off in college. He absolutely loves this girl called Alisha Merchant. He is a little bit of geek. He loves his computer and academics whereas this girl is fun, spunky, spontaneous and the most popular girl in the college. They never speak; she doesn't even know he exists. And how one day after she gets out of school, he is heartbroken and then how about 6 – 7 years later, they meet again. She doesn't still know who he is, but this time they come back in each other's life all over again and get to know each other. It's a beautiful love story - so sensitively written yet so funny.

How is it working with Uday as a co star?
Ans: - Uday brings out the madness in me. He is always feeding me. He calls for the best food, and I have a little bit of a weakness for food. He will call for all kinds of cuisines and then I overeat and keep becoming fatter. And he meanwhile will go to the gym and work out. But oh God!! We have had so many fun times on this film. Crazy things - like we never used to sleep. After pack up Jugal, Uday, Ahmed and me used to go to like 24 hour coffee shops, and stay awake till 6 in the morning and talk just about nothing and everything. We used to look at each other and just start laughing. Uday is the best Producer I have worked with. He spoils me silly. I told him, 'I don't think I will be able to work with anybody else'. He is lovely - as a Producer, as an actor and as a writer.

Tell us something about your character Alisha Merchant.
Ans: - She is a girl who gets married when she was really young. She is a little bit of a mess in herself. When Abhay sees her, he sees her as a princess who is totally unachievable. She is always trying to please everyone - her friends, her boss, but with Abhay she doesn't have to, she can be just be herself. That's the most beautiful thing about their relationship.

Did you prepare for the role?
Ans: - I just didn't. I just went in there and I had to be me and that just kind of worked!

Did you have a lot of look tests pre-shoot?
Ans:- Yes we did a lot of readings and look tests , because I had to have short hair and I have never had short hair. I just wanted to do something dramatic with Alisha, as she is very stylish so we thought we go short. We had this look test for clothes but most with the hair. Also, for the clothes, Manish (Malhotra) wanted to make sure we got it right. She had to be all colors, and casual chic.

Tell us something about your college look.
Ans: - You know, you have this convention that while you are in college you have short hair and by the time you grow older you have long hair. But we just didn't want to go with that convention. So, while I was in college I kept long hair and by the time Alisha gets older she just chops her hair. That's how I thought she would do. The college look was a lot of fun but spunkier. She is the kind of person who does what she wants. She loves water sports, roller-blading. She is a sporty, fun chick, but is girly at the same time.

How is Jugal Hansraj as a Director?
Ans: - I think this 'overacting meter' is fitted somewhere inside of him. He is very particular about "I think yeh thoda sa jyada ho gaya" (I think that was a bit too much). He is very clear about 'how much or how less'. He does it with so much grace and he is so chilled out! You never feel you are working and there is no pressure of "let's hurry up and all." I never felt like I was working on a film.

The Director of Photography (DoP), Santosh Thundiyil, has worked in Pyaar Impossible. It looks like a light-hearted film, what do you want to say about it?
Ans: - Well, I enjoy working with Santosh Sir. We have a great working relationship with each other. I have worked with him before on a few earlier films. He just shows his diversity as a DoP in Pyaar Impossible. This film looks completely different from the ones we did together. It's got a freshness to it. The colors are enhanced. Everyone looks great. I think he could do it because he is always in a good mood. We were always making fun of him because of his accent and he was always making fun of ours. It was just done in good spirit.

What about your choreographer, Ahmed Khan?
Ans: - Well I have known Ahmed for a long time now. He has outdone himself in this film. He is very intelligent. He never lets go of the story. He never lets go of the emotional crux of the moment for the sake of style. He has kept his choreography simple because it's a simple story.

What are your thoughts on the title of the film, 'Pyaar Impossible'?
Ans: - I just love the title, I think it is funny! It sums up the film in its entirety. That's what the movie is about. Abhay thinks that there is no way this pyaar can be possible. When you see these two people in a frame, you just say "Ok, there is no way this can happen because they are such different people!" I think the title is apt for the film.

Music plays a key role in your screenplay. What are your thoughts on the music directors - Salim & Suleiman?
Ans: - I think they are hugely talented. I have worked with them before. Pyaar Impossible is a feel good movie, so every song makes you feel good. Every song makes you feel for the character. And primarily, that's what you want the music to do. The first time I heard the songs, I was trying to sing the song Alisha, but Anushka has sung the song so much better than me. The songs are amazing and so correct with the characters.

Tell us about 'Alisha' - the song?
Ans: - The song Alisha is about a girl in college and Abhay's point of view of her. You know, both of them are singing "main kahan tu kahan". They are both singing the same line but both are doing it from their own perspective. It's an amazing song! It was raining when we were on the beach and we used to pray for the rain to stop. Inevitably it would rain between the shots; we never got to wait for the rain to go away. I think when we were shooting Alisha, we shot it in beaches, university, but more than anything it was actually the fact that we were enjoying what we were doing. There was not much choreography, it was just grooving to the music because the groove of Alisha is very interesting.

What is "Rockmantics"?
Ans: - Rockmantics is the name of my band in college. I have never played the guitar, but realized that I have to play one on the day of the shoot! Thankfully Ahmed knows how to play one, so he showed me how to hold it correctly and also taught me a few chords. I think it eventually turned out great so I am happy!

How about the title track, 'Pyaar Impossible'?
Ans: - Pyaar Impossible is a song about how Abhay tells Alisha that it's not easy being a geek because you don't get attention from people. But she insists that people can't be so shallow that they talk to you only if you are beautiful, there has to be something beyond it. So Abhay offers to dress Alisha as a geek and tells her, that if she can get one telephone number from any guy, he'll believe that the world is not as bad as he thinks it is. That's what the song is about - she is saying its possible and Abhay is saying it's impossible. You'll see in the song that none of the guys even look at her so she feels dejected and that's one thing Abhay can't stand, so he sings "no it's possible". I think the song is so cute; there are some really nice moments in it.

How was it shooting in Clark Quay?
Ans:- It was really nice. We shot there late at night, there were Singaporeans looking at us and dancing in the middle of the song! I was acting like a lunatic and dressed as a geek .We used to eat rubbish - different foods from Lebanese to Mexican. Our entire schedule was based on what are we going to eat, shooting was just incidental.

"You and Me" - tell us something about it!
Ans: - 'You and me' is an awesome song. It's got a great groove; I think it will be a very popular number! We are still Alisha and Abhay and there are characters coming and interacting with these two characters. They are random characters. It's a fun music video.

How did you come up with your geek look in the title song, Pyaar impossible?
Ans: - Well Manish has this thing that the actress has to look lovely, but we came on set and I was in the geek look. I was wearing a headband and all, but it looked studious - not unattractive. When Ahmed came on to the set and saw me, he immediately commented, "I would go out with that chick!" We were like, "What no, no would you like to give her your number?" He was like, of course! We were in trouble! My team and I went inside the tent and Priyanka, my hair dresser, and Subbu, said, "let's just screw it up". So my hair was frizzed up, strange kajal put on eyes, dark lipstick and all. Because Abhay was the one who was transforming Alisha into a geek, and he would not know anything on makeup, our logic was that Abhay would try and make her look weird. That's how he will prove his point. So we came out with that make up and Ahmed said, "That's it, I would not give her my number because that looks psychotic". And we knew we had the perfect look!

In one of the songs, you have shot with kids. How was the experience?
Ans: - I adore kids and I had an amazing time working with the kids on the film. But there were times when we were like 'stop it, let's get this shot done'. One would smile, the other one would start crying, another one would show attitude. Ahmed used to go mad. I used to just fall asleep. I used to tell them, 'wake me up when the shot is ready' because it would take two hours for the shot to get ready. But eventually the song looks fine and the kids are looking so lovely.

What about the fun sequence of 'You and Me'?
Ans: - I think the miniatures are really cool. The video will take you by surprise.

This is your first Yashraj film. How was the experience working with them?
Ans: - I feel Yashraj is home now. Anyway, it's just 10 minutes away from my house. I have had great memories here. My make-up room has become my room. Every time I shoot, I use that room only. I used to have pounding music when I came in the morning so everyone knew Priyanka is here! I have had some great times. Though I think YRF always spoils all its actors so it was bound to happen.

You celebrated your birthday on the sets of Pyaar Impossible. Comment.

Ans: - Ya, I celebrated my birthday on the Pyaar Impossible set. I got this giant card signed by everybody on the set and in the center it had a picture of the entire crew. It was so sweet and touching. My favourite cake was called and I got all lumpy and almost cried and everyone sang for me. It was really sweet of the PI crew, I had so much fun!ence working on Pyaar Impossible

Adds the source, "Karan has these exciting requests handy for all these celebs. He happened to throw one at Priyanka and asked her to sing. Priyanka who is always in the mood for games, instantly started singing - Jhumka gira re Bareilly ke bazaar mein… the famous Sadhana number from Mera Saaya."

The film industry is full of stars that have managed to make it on their own, without having any member of the family to look back to nor any so called Godfather. One such girl is of course Priyanka Chopra. We do think this is very kind of the charming lady.

Just A Minute With: Priyanka Chopra

MUMBAI (Reuters) -- She is the girl with the golden touch. In the past few years, Priyanka Chopra has cemented her place as one of the most bankable heroines in Bollywood.

From "Dostana" to "Kaminey", the dusky 27-year-old is experimenting with different roles but admits that at times she prefers to do "simplistic films".

Chopra spoke to Reuters about her new film "Pyaar Impossible", why she may not get any awards this year and how 2009 fared in her books.

Q: What made you say yes to "Pyaar Impossible"? It seems like a regular love story.

A: "When Uday (Chopra) and Jugal (Hansraj) came to me I think even they were not sure whether I would do the film, but what appealed to me was the simplicity of the script. At that point I was doing films like 'Kaminey' and 'What's Your Raashee'. I had just finished 'Fashion', all of which were very difficult films. The simplicity of the love story was something I really liked."

Q: Your roles in the last couple of years have really differed. How do you see your growth as an actor during this time?

A: "I feel that I have just recently understood what acting really is and what I can do. I was very young when I started out, I was just 17. So now I am like a kid in a toy store. In every film, I want to do something different. I want to do different kinds of roles, different kinds of looks. I am very grateful for the last five or six films that I have done, because they have given me that kind of space."

Q: Now that awards season is coming up, do you have any hopes from any of your films in 2009?

A: "Well, I don't know about that. I am excited. 'Kaminey' got a great response for me. People loved my work in the film and it was something I didn't expect. Anyway I try not to have expectations. Plus, I am not going to be in India at that time, and you know how awards are, you have to be there."

Q: How has 2009 been for you?

A: "It was great. I won my Best Actress (award) this year for 'Fashion'. 'Fashion' was really special because it was such a girl's movie and was so heavy on me. The fact that a film like that did the business that it did, made me feel really good about myself. A lot of people said who is going to watch a female-centric film, but it had a great opening despite being an A- certificate film. 'What's Your Raashee' didn't do as well as it should have, so that upset me. I had put in a lot of work into the film but that is my job. As an actor you have to put you heart and soul into every film."

Q: You had two of your toughest roles in "What's Your Raashee" and "Kaminey".

A: "Yes, both were hugely tough roles. 'Kaminey', especially because the character came from a background I didn't identify with at all. It was crucial that Sweety had an intrinsic earthiness to her, which was difficult for me.

"It is easier for me to do 'Dostana'. That is why I was hugely surprised when I got the reviews that I got for this film. It might be a risky proposition but what's the point if you don't push the envelope? There will be a time when you do a film that you know will do well, and even I will do those films once in a while."

Q: You've also been accused of overworking, pushing yourself a lot. Is that true?

A: "Come on, I just fell ill during two films. During 'Dostana' I was working hard, I had two films releasing at that point. But imagine I was talking to you slowly and without any energy. How boring would I be. I love my energy and I am at my happiest when I am on set."

Q: Have people been telling you to slow down?

A: "My parents told me for a while… but who listens to parents anyway? (laughs). I did listen, I went for a holiday, I am obedient like that. But then I came back and wanted to work. Now my mother has given up on me. I love people, I love my work."

Q: Which films are in the pipeline?

A: "Well, there is 'Anjaana Anjaani' with Ranbir Kapoor which is a love story with a fresh twist to it. Then I am starting Vishal's (Bhardwaj's) film which will be my most difficult film, even though I know I say that about every film. It is like a dark comedy and it's a part which is so brilliantly written. We have lots of male leads in the film -- there are about seven husbands in the film. But I cannot say anything more about it."

Priyanka Chopra finalised for Tees Maar Khan?

She’s said to be teaming up with Akshay Kumar again

Farah Khan has been on the lookout for the female lead of her new film “Tees Maar Khan”. The idea was to sign a new girl, but in case one was not found, Farah was willing to take an established actress.

If reports are to be believed, Farah has now managed a casting coup of sorts. She has finalised Priyanka Chopra to play the lead opposite Akshay Kumar.

So, the once hot couple who gave many hits like “Andaaz”, “Aitraaz” and “Mujhse Sahaadi Karogi”, will once again scorch the screen in “Tees Maar Khan”.

Though many filmmakers have wanted to sign them, it is Farah who took the initiative to get the couple together, who had decided not to work with each other following reports of their romance several years ago. Their link-up had upset Akki’s wife Twinkle and he’s said to have promised her never to work with Priyanka.

Recently, however, there were reports of Akshay and Priyanka breaking the ice and having a conversation while rehearsing for a stage performance.

Probably encouraged by this thaw in their cold war, Farah asked Akshay if he had any reservations about working with Priyanka, and he said that he would love to work with her.

However, Farah has not given any confirmation about this pairing and said that she will announce the female lead by mid-January.

Priyanka and Katrina in Italian Job Buzz up!

Abbas Mustan are tightlipped, but buzz is Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif will be a part of the remake of the Italian Job.

The director duo have had their heart set on remaking the 2003 Mark Wahlberg starrer smash hit. After the success of Race, while a sequel of the movie was being planned, the director’s decided to devote their attention to this multi-crore project. Abbas Mustan who have been accused of lifting several Hollywood films in the past decided to go in for a direct adaptation with producers Studio 18 buying the right of the Hollywood blockbuster. However the director’s insist that it isn’t a direct lift and several changes have been made in the script and characters, “Whenever we've adapted a film we've completely Indianized the story. Though Studio 18 has bought the rights and though we can use every frame from the original same-to-same, we don't want to do that. We're going to Indianize The Italian Job. We'll add roles for two heroines. And the villain will be played by one of the top heroes. We want to make it better than the original,” says Abbas.

Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh have been zeroed down as the main leads and Katrina with whom the makers were in talks with has finally been roped in according to sources. Apart from Katrina, news is Priyanka Chopra too will be a part of the film. A source from the production house says, “Abbas while rewriting the script had already written in two actresses as compared to the original just had one, Charlize Theron. While Katrina had been roped in way earlier formalities were yet to be undertaken. Priyanka has been through several story sessions and the directors are very keen on roping her in as well. They also have an American actress in mind. Still as of now, there still a lot of scripting changes and the casting process needs a lot of work indeed. The entire industry wants to be a part of the movie considering the fact that its going to be much bigger and better.”

Abbas brushed off the news of Priyanka and Kat being confirmed for the movie but said that they were being considered for the roles. Speaking about their ambitious next he added, “Studio 18 thought of us for an Indian Italian Job after seeing how we shot the chase sequences in Race. Two years ago to execute the intricate action scenes in The Italian Job would've been tough. Today we can comfortably pull it off. Our producers are willing to go all out. No expenses will be spared to make sure our The Italian Job is as good as the original. The chase sequences and action will leave the audience in awe and the heists will be out of the world, we are trying to one up ourselves. The Italian Job was a cult film in Hollywood. In the remake, we will maintain that cult factor, except that we will add an Indian element.”

“I was heartbroken” - Priyanka Chopra

2009 was an eventful year for Priyanka Chopra. She played as many as 12 roles in What's Your Raashee? but the film failed to take off. On the other hand, she had less than 12 scenes in Kaminey and not just did the film turn out to be a success but in the process also fetched Priyanka quite some accolades and appreciation. In the uncertain world of Bollywood, Priyanka isn't willing to differentiate between big and small. This is the reason why after working in relatively bigger budget films like Dostana and Fashion and sharing screen space with top stars, she doesn't mind being the leading lady of Uday Chopra who is making a comeback of sorts with Pyaar Impossible.

Buzz uIn a conversation with us, Priyanka shares her point of view on how all actors are small if the bigger picture of a film as a whole is taken into account, how she copes with failure and why in spite of being in the industry for more than half a decade; she continues to be a director's actor.

There aren't many big names involved in Pyaar Impossible except for the fact that the film marks your entry into Yash Raj Films. Really, what made you sign the film?
Why are you forgetting the most integral part about filmmaking - the script? You seem to be conveniently ignoring the fact that a film is not made of just stars and banners. It requires a definite story and this is where Pyaar Impossible wins. I really like the film's basic plot about a nerdy guy falling in love with a glam girl. Believe me when I say that I after Dostana, I had most fun working in Pyaar Impossible.

With Uday and director Jugal Hansraj around, you must have felt like the senior most in Pyaar Impossible, right? Seems like you had quite some responsibility on your shoulders.
Well, if you look at it this way then perhaps Manish Malhotra (the costume designer of the film) was the senior most of the lot (laughs). See, one should not be generalising things this way that who was the senior most and who was the junior of the lot. It's a learning process and it all happens on the job.

Aah, now you are being diplomatic...
Arrey nahi. See when I started doing films, I had no idea what had to be done in front of the camera. I was just 19 and a blank piece of paper. I wasn't formally trained on acting and had no Godfather to help me out. This is why I said that I had to do it all on the job. Over the years I had the fortune to work with people who helped me grow as an actor. Till date I consider myself as a director's actor.

Even after 30 odd films?
Pretty much so. I am not confident to do it all by myself. I need a director to help me get the overall effect bang on. Otherwise if came with the capability of calling the shots, toh kya main khud director nahi ban jaati!

As someone who hands herself over to the director, don't you feel hurt when even a brilliant act of yours goes relatively unnoticed, case in point being What's Your Raashee?
See, an actor is a very small part of a film. As an actor I can't do much if a film of mine doesn't work. But then if people come out of a theatre and say that they hated my performance then I would be truly shattered. I would want to go back and check that what really went wrong. I got some great reviews for What's Your Raashee? and that was soothing to an extent.

You must have still felt sad. After all a lot of hard work had seemingly gone in getting into the skin of the character, in this case as many as 12 of them!
Sad? That's an understatement. I was heartbroken. I really wept a lot when the film didn't work.

After Pyaar Impossible, you would be seen in Siddharth Anand directed Anjaana Anjaani (with Ranbir Kapoor) followed by Vishal Bhardwaj's next (yet untitled) directorial outing. In last two years, you have had eight of your films releasing. Don't you ever feel like cutting down on work and taking a deep breath?
Really, I enjoy those days the most when I am shooting for films and commercials or doing any other work which is worthwhile and keeps me busy. Mujhe woh craving hoti hi nahi ki chalo, mein ek week thoda rest kar loon ya holiday par chali jaaon. I don't consider work as a burden at all.

Meanwhile you were also not keeping too well all through 2009 as well. Really Priyanka, what's happening to your health? Isn't it too much of work.
It wasn't that bad actually. There was this stomach infection a few weeks back but that's absolutely fine now. Otherwise I kept myself really busy all through the year and if you ask me, this is the way I like things to be. It gives me tremendous pleasure and I get my highest high on those days when I crash on bed dead tired.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra (Hindi: प्रियंका चोपड़ा; born 18 July 1982)[1] is an Indian actress and former Miss World. Before starting her acting career, she worked as a model and gained fame after winning the Miss World title in 2000.[2]

Chopra made her acting debut with the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan. The following year, she made her Hindi film debut with The Hero: Love Story of a Spy and followed it with the hit Andaaz, for which she won a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. In 2004 she became the second woman to win the Filmfare Best Villain Award, which she received for her critically acclaimed performance in Aitraaz. Chopra would later have commercial success with films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), Krrish (2006) and Don - The Chase Begins Again.[3] Chopra earned a Filmfare Best Actress Award for her portrayal of a model in Fashion (2008) and has thus established herself as one of the leading contemporary actresses in Bollywood.[4][5]

Early life

Chopra was born in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand to Ashok Chopra and Madhu Akhauri, both physicians by profession.[6] Chopra spent her childhood in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh; Newton, Massachusetts; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.[7] Her father was in the army and thus her family moved quite frequently. Her father hailed from a family of Punjabi Khatri origin, settled in Bareilly and her mother comes from a Bihari Kayastha family settled in Jamshedpur. She also has a brother, Siddharth, who is seven years younger than she is.[8]

Chopra studied at La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow as a young girl. These frequent re-locations took place as Ashok was a physician in the Indian Army. She subsequently re-located to the U.S. where she studied in Newton South High School in Newton, Massachusetts and then in John F. Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She returned to India and did her high school at Army School in Bareilly. She began college at Jai Hind College in Mumbai but left after winning the Miss World pageant.

Miss World

Chopra came in second place at Femina Miss India 2000 competition winning the Femina Miss India World title and subsequently being sent to Miss World where she was crowned Miss World 2000.[9] In the same year, Lara Dutta and Dia Mirza, both also from India, won the Miss Universe and Miss Asia Pacific crowns respectively, in a rare triple victory for one country.

When Chopra won the Miss World crown, she became the fifth Indian woman to win the title, and the fourth Indian woman to win in a span of seven years.

On December 12, 2009, Chopra was present as a judge for the Miss World 2009 competition held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The film turned out to be a box office success,[10] earning her a Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Her next few films released in 2004 like Plan, Kismat and Asambhav performed poorly at the box office.[11] Later that year she appeared in David Dhawan's romantic comedy Mujhse Shaadi Karogi playing the role of a young fashion designer Rani along with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, the film turned out to be the third highest grossing film of that year.[12] She next starred in Aitraaz. Nikhil Advani's ensemble piece, Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute To Love was Chopra's first release in 2007. The movie failed to do well at the box office.[15] Chopra's next release, Big Brother also underperformed.

In 2008, Chopra featured in six films. Her first four films, Love Story 2050, God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku and Drona, failed to do well.[16] Chopra's fifth release of the year, Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion was a critical success. The film revolved around the fashion world and Chopra's role was that of an ambitious model. Her performance in the film was appreciated and earned her several awards for Best Actress including the Filmfare Best Actress Award.[17] Chopra's final release of the year was Tarun Mansukhani's romantic comedy Dostana. The film was a moderate financial success.[16][18]

In 2009 she appeared in Vishal Bharadwaj's Kaminey alongside Shahid Kapoor playing a marathi girl named Sweety. Her performance in the film was described by critic Taran Adarsh: "Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect".[19] She has appeared in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee? and Jugal Hansraj's Pyaar Impossible.[20]. Priyanka plays the college beauty in this film.[21]
